Diversity Policy

The Council is committed to promoting equal opportunities and valuing diversity in all its roles as community champion, service provider and employer.

This means the council will:

  • Work to achieve social justice and inclusion
  • Oppose and prevent discrimination against individuals because of their age, disability, gender, ethnic origin or nationality, sexual orientation, domestic circumstances, marital status, political or religious belief.
  • Treat all citizens of Blackburn with Darwen fairly and with respect.
  • Recognise the rights of individuals to participate fully in the democratic, social and economic life of the borough.

Our overall priorities will be to:

  • Act as community champion and citizens' advocate.
  • Promote cultural and community harmony.
  • Maximise opportunities for communities to live, work and learn together so that individuals can reach their full potential.
  • Consult with and beyond community leaders listening to people's views and responding to them.
  • Work with other key organisations in the Borough, like the Health service, to tackle institutional racism, sexism and other similar kinds of unfair treatmen

Our priorities for services will be to:

  • Make sure that the services that the Council provides, or purchases from other organisations, do not discriminate against any section of the community.
  • Provide services that are responsive to people's diverse needs, accessible and culturally appropriate within the resources that the council has.
  • Apply all legal regulations and enforcement powers consistently.
  • Produce information in a variety of accessible formats including where appropriate, the use of community languages, Braille, British Sign Language etc.
  • Ensure that public reception areas are welcoming and accessible with facilities for confidential meetings.
